What is more important, impact or outcome?

Through reading and conversation, I’ve come across people who say that they want to have an impact. You probably know someone who wishes to have an impact on the world. That person might even be you.

I know that I want to have an impact. I’d also love to have a bite of the prestige cake that goes along with having “impact”. “Prestige through impact” I suppose. It sounds vain, but it is what it is. I believe this is also what others seek when they say they want to have an impact on something.

The more I think about it it’s however a bad idea to strive for. What we should be seeking is an outcome. Whether or not you’re the one to have contributed, or impacted if you’d like, to this outcome then the outcome is the end goal.

That being said I will probably continue to strive for prestige through impact. I’m arrogant that way. Hopefully, I’ll be able to think about the outcome more often though, and step aside when my impact isn’t needed or worse – is counterproductive.
